In a world where most of our daily lives are heavily influenced by modern technology, it may seem surprising that the Amish people have managed to thrive by living the way they do – without electricity, automobiles, television, or other things that make life easier and, to many of us, more enjoyable. Yet their numbers are growing and it is likely that Amish communities will continue to thrive. Perhaps it is because the life that they lead – surrounded by the family and close to nature – is attractive to the children growing up in Amish households. Perhaps these things are perceived to be more valuable than a television set or the latest fashion.

Amish lifestyle is indeed different. Amish men still drive black buggies led by horses and use old-fashioned farming methods. Amish women lead traditional lifestyles-caring for the family and doing most household chores. But it is surprising to note that although the Amish seem different on the outside, they aren't all that different from most of us.

Many Amish children attend school and, during recess, play on swings or enjoy games of hide-and-seek. Amish teenagers date and go to parties. Amish adults pay taxes and, though they have a deep hatred for war, they have signed up for noncombat duty during military drafts.

In this beautifully illustrated book, author Doris Faber vividly describes the Amish with lively details of home and family, school and work, farming methods, religious beliefs, and more. She provides a colorful look at their past and an intriguing glimpse into their future.
